The New William Rainey Harper School is part of Segment 7 of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Long Range Master Plan.  The new school offers the International Baccalaureate Programme, and replaced the former Harper Elementary School which has been demolished.  Due to site constraints, several design options were originally considered.  Ultimately, a 2-story facility plan that has a smaller overall footprint was chosen.  This plan allows for additional site features such as large parking lots and playground areas.  This project is co-funded by the
OSFC under the Accelerated Urban Initiative (AUI) Program and will be constructed under the Construction Manager at Risk (CMR) delivery method.
By engaging and partnering with the community, the design was evolved through a series of community meetings during each phase of design. The community meetings were composed of residents of the local community, representatives of local businesses, and individuals from the Neighborhood Building Advisory Committee.  The school features unique components such as areas for extended learning (ELA) with breakout rooms and spaces for individual and collaborative learning both inside and outside of the building. Day lighting concepts range from automated lighting controls to increased natural light in classrooms.  As this building is LEED Silver certified, all aspects of LEED design elements were given due consideration.
I served as the Lead Interior Designer on this new construction project.  I actively steered the client throughout the design process from conceptual design through project punch lists and closeout. I was responsible for contract documents, space planning for furniture and equipment, and presenting ideas and detailed design boards to clients. I collaborated with five other architectural firms to create master furniture specifications for the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s Segment 7 building projects involving nine school buildings.
